Set deep in the heart of the ancient African tropical rainforest is Shimba Hills; it is cleverly constructed in indigenous timber that blends perfectly with the luxuriant forest vegetation. Just 45 minutes from Diani's silver beaches, Shimba Hills National Reserve's 192 sq. km rolling down rainforest has been reserved for Kenya's last breeding herds of Sable antelope. Elephant, buffalo, civet, serval and genet cat share this scenic home, and can be sighted most evenings at Shimba's floodlit waterholes. In addition, a real treat for our guests is the frequent visits by members of the unusual high leopard population.

All rooms are comfortable and uniquely furnished; some with the gnarled trunk of a tree providing a natural centerpiece, and others overlooking the waterhole. Single, double and triple rooms share the bathroom facilities. Suites have private bathrooms. The open fronted dining room allows unrestricted game and bird viewing at all times. An elevated walkway extending well into the forest gives peace-seeking visitors, a few rare moments alone with nature.

Excitement does not end at the lodge. Shimba is one of the few places at the national reserve where guests can experience the wilderness on foot. Accompanied by an armed guide, there are walks to Marere Dam, Cycad Forest, and a shower at Sheldrick Falls. Early morning and evening game drives in safari cruisers are available; the Shimba sundowner excursion, with views well into neighboring Tanzania is a must.
